Downloading and Installing Dawn

Warning!

This page is under development.

Introduction and Scope

Dawn (http://dawnsci.org/) is open-source data analysis software developed at Diamond, but can be used on data from anywhere. This guide shows you how to download, install, and configure, dawn.

Requirements

A PC with an internet connection and some hard drive space.

Guide

  1. Navigate your browser to http://dawnsci.org/downloads/
  2. Download the relevant version (this guide assumes Windows, please consult the dawn or beamline teams for assistance with other operating systems)
  3. Dawn does not need to be installed; simply unzip the file to a hard drive location of your choosing. We typically go for c:\program files\dawn.
  4. (optional) some processing pipelines (such as the PDF processing) can be rather memory intensive. By default dawn will only ask windows for 1 Gb of memory; to require more:
    1. locate the directory into which you unzipped dawn.
    2. Within this directory there should be a file called dawn.ini
    3. open this file in a text editor which understands line breaks (such as jEdit or notepad++)
    4. somewhere around line 10 will be two line which define the starting amount of memory (Xms) and the maximum allowed amount (Xmx). Change the Xmx line to Xmx8192m (or any multiple of 1024m) to increase the maximum memory allocation to (in this case) * Gb.
